Under 12 Rule Modification
GBJRL to trial rule modification for Under 12s
Season 2012 will see a rule change trial for all under 12 Modified Games played in the GBJRL. This change is seen to provide a further opportunity to prepare players of this age for the International Rules game played at Under 13 level and beyond.
Under this trial players will have more opportunities to run the ball out of dummy half and from the first receiver positions. This trial follows on from the successful ‘arm band’ rule trialled in the Ipswich JRL in 2011.
Extensive monitoring will be conducted on games played under this trial to determine the effect it has on the development of players, especially those in the positions of hooker and halfback. It is the thought that with these rule modifications players will be able to confidently learn the basics of attack for these key positions and have the added benefit of increasing their enjoyment playing the game.
The trial will also provide players the opportunity to learn defensive marker play required at higher levels of the game.
GBJRL Operations Manager, Shane Mc Nally said “the GBJRL Management Committee is always looking for ways to challenge players and to advance their development of ‘game understanding’. The coaches also will be challenged by these rule modifications and how they implement the teaching and practise of the required skills will have a strong influence of the success of the trial”.
Brisbane based QRL Education and Development Officers will be conducting coaching updates to assist with the implementation of the introduced rules for all under 12 coaches within the GBJRL. Details of these updates will be available shortly. Details of rule modifications are listed below:
Rules Trial Under 12 Competitions 2012.
· The following Rules Trial for Under 12 will be carried out during the 2012:
· The Laws of the (adult) Game of Rugby League shall apply and the Laws of Mod League subject to the following modifications for the Greater Brisbane JRL trail (only these modifications) where applicable.
Play the Ball
If the team in possession of the football play the ball inside their own half, the acting halfback or first receiver may elect to run at any time and be tackled without forfeiting possession.
In this instance: One marker must be present, but the tackling team may have two markers at the play the ball. The marker/s is/are allowed to move once the ball has cleared the ruck (as per the International Laws of the Game).
If the team in possession of the football play the ball inside their opponent’s half, the acting halfback and the player receiving the football from the acting halfback may either pass the ball or run. Should either elect to run, not score and be tackled, their team will turn over possession of the football.
In this instance: One marker only must always be present at the play the ball. The marker is not to move until the football is in the hands of the first receiver unless the acting halfback runs, kicks or mishandles the football.
